Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that any foreign national who is in Canada and receives a job offer is eligible to apply for and be granted a work permit.
28 February 2023, Ottawa – Foreign nationals who receive a valid job offer while visiting Canada will still be able to apply for and be granted a work permit without needing to leave the country. Visitors who apply in accordance with this public policy and who had a work permit within the previous year may still ask for temporary work authorization to start working for their new employer more quickly. This COVID-era temporary public policy, which was supposed to end today, has been extended by two years, to February 28, 2025.
People who wanted to work in Canada used to have to apply for their initial work permit before they arrived, but this temporary policy change eliminates that requirement. If they had visitor status when they were granted a work permit, they would have to leave the country to receive their work permit. This policy eliminates the need to leave Canada.
To be considered for this temporary public policy, an applicant must:
1. have a job offer that is backed by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA have valid visitor status in Canada on the day they apply.
2.exempt employment offer
3.Applicants must submit a work permit application specific to their employer by February 28, 2025.
4.meet every other standard criterion for admissibility.
